FL0 – A Day Off at Anchorage Airport

After arriving in Anchorage yesterday, I decided to spend the day at the airport. Just can’t be without planes around me, it’s terrible! I know…
So at 8 am I had nothing better to do than firing up that Humvee and drive to the airport. I had to fill out some stuff for my upcoming FedEX flight in their office anyways, so why not take the chance to do some cargo spotting.

There we go, on our way to the airport. First we had to drop off a friend at the passenger terminal

After she got out of the car, I could start my spotting tour. Thanks to my ATPL and my good connections, I could get a clearance to drive that Humvee onto the apron

On our way to the entry gate to the airside

And here we are. Let’s take a look at the Alaska Airlines maintenance facilites first. Some nice 737s parked there

A little further East are some nice Northern Air Cargo DC-6

There’s not much more to come in that direction, so we turn around and pay a visit to the AANG. Not much going on here, but I said Hi to a buddy of mine

Right behind the AANG is a little remote cargo ramp

We had to cross runway 07R to get back to the other part of the airport. Tower cleared us to cross and we took this shot while doing so

Shortly after this Korean B777 was approaching right over us

We drove all the way to runway 14. A FedEX MD-11 was about to take off and we were allowed to watch from the Holding Point.

On the way back we encountered this Boeing 747

And this FedEX MD-11…

And yet another MD-11, this time from UPS

China Eastern also uses MD-11 to Anchorage

Now let’s go to the FedEX offices, we still need to sign that paperwork

Lucky us we don’t have to fly to Osaka in this ATR 42

The station manager was a huge aviation fan himself, and showed us some aerial pictures he took from Anchorage on a private flight some time

After a nice chat and a cup of coffee, it was time to leave. We didn’t want to spend all day at the airport. There’s a life besides aviation as well. But this ORBIS flying eye hospital DC-10 couldn’t be left unphotographed

On our way out the airport police stopped us and asked why we were driving around the airport like a maniac. We explained to them and they were very understanding and let us leave
Photobucket

Bye Bye Anchorage. Next time I will leave you with wings again

A last view, passing some Korean Air Cargo B747s from the other side of the fence
